FYP

FYP, For You Page, is a personalized video feed that appears when users first open the TikTok app.

What does FYP mean?

TikTok's For You Page, also known as FYP, is the first page a user lands on when they open the TikTok app. TikTok uses this space to curate content based on a person's activity on the platform. 

TikTok uses an algorithm that goes through accounts and hashtags people follow, what kinds of posts they like, and their language and location settings to make a fully customized and curated FYP feed for each person who lands there.

How does the TikTok FYP algorithm work?

On TikTok, the FYP (For You Page) feed is a reflection of a person's interests and interactions. TikTok uses an algorithm, or a recommendation system, to rank the content based on its value to a user and personalize this feed for each user. Some of the factors used in this system are:

  • User interactions such as the content you like or share, accounts you follow, comments you post, and content you create.
  • Video information, which might include details like captions, sounds, and hashtags.
  • Device and account settings like your language preference, country setting, and device type.

What's the difference between TikTok's FYP and Instagram's Explore Page?

Although TikTok's For You Page (FYP) and Instagram's Explore Page both serve similar goals - to help users discover new content and creators they'll love – there are differences in how they function, display the content, and are prioritized in the app. 

First, Instagram places this page as a secondary tab that you must navigate to, while TikTok places it as the homepage. In addition, the content is shown differently in the two apps. TikTok only shows video content in a full-screen mode that users can scroll through, while Instagram's Explore Page presents all types of content (video, photos, carousels) in a grid-like format of smaller thumbnails that people can tap to view in more detail.

How can I get on FYP on TikTok?

Getting your videos to appear on more For You pages is a process, and it's not meant to be easy, but it will help you to drive more targeted traffic to your videos, increase your chances of going viral, and gain more followers. It's the ultimate tactic for reaching interested audiences and giving your videos the visibility they deserve. Here are some ways you can increase your chances of your videos being shown on other people's FYP:

  • Figure out your target audience: The first step in growing your followers is pinpointing your target audience. Once you've got this down, you'll have a better idea of who you're making TikToks for. This will allow you to produce videos that will be entertaining, engaging, and informative for your viewers.
  • Use relevant keywords and hashtags: When you use relevant keywords and hashtags on TikTok, it optimizes your content for search and increases your videos' discoverability. For example, you should add your search keywords to your captions and the text on your videos to optimize them for search. 
  • Develop your niche: Once you know which TikTok videos receive the most engagement, we recommend playing to your strengths and producing videos that fit that niche.

Why do people use #FYP?

Many TikTokers add the #FYP hashtag to their captions with the hopes of increasing their chances of being shown on other people's FYP and reaching a wider audience. However, this tactic is not guaranteed to make your video appear on FYPs. Many say it doesn't make a difference at all in video views. Instead, we recommend using hashtags that are more relevant to your niche and the topics covered in your videos.
