Instagram Broadcast Channel

Instagram Broadcast Channels are one-to-many messaging channels, a new way for creators to deepen connections with their followers.

What is an Instagram Broadcast Channel?

Think of an Instagram Broadcast Channel as a one-to-many DM. It lets creators send updates to followers who have opted in, with no risk of getting lost in the feed. Instagrammers with Creator accounts and over 10,000 followers can set up a channel, which functions as a read-only group chat where followers can react with emojis but not respond directly.

Since its launch in early 2023, Instagram’s Broadcast Channels have quickly become a game-changer for creators looking to reach their most dedicated followers directly.

Why should I create an Instagram Broadcast Channel?

Instagram Broadcast Channels offer an alternative to the usual story or feed post, helping your content stand out and reach your top followers without competing with the Instagram algorithm. Here’s why creators are loving this feature:

  • Direct communication: Updates land right in your followers’ inboxes, so they’re less likely to get buried.
  • Exclusive content: Create a more intimate experience by sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses, product teasers, or VIP offers.
  • Simple engagement: With reactions limited to emojis, it’s a streamlined, clutter-free way to connect with followers who want to stay in the loop.

Who can create a Broadcast Channel on Instagram?

At this stage, you’ll need at least 10,000 followers and a Creator account to start a channel. If you haven’t yet switched to a Creator account, you can do so in your account settings.

However, it seems that Instagram may slowly be opening this feature up to more users, as implied by this comment from a help article:

"Keep in mind that broadcast channels are slowly being released on Instagram and aren’t available to everyone at this time. Broadcast channels can be started by a public account with more than 10,000 followers. We are actively working to improve the experience and make the feature available to more accounts on Instagram in the future."

How do I set up a Broadcast Channel on Instagram?

To set up your own Broadcast Channel on Instagram, take the following steps:

  1. Switch to a Creator Account if you haven’t already.
  2. Open your DMs and select “Create broadcast channel.”
  3. Customize your channel by setting a name, choosing your audience, and deciding if the channel will appear on your profile.
  4. Invite followers by sending your first message, sharing an invite link, or promoting it in your Stories.
