9. Museo Archeologico Provinciale – Museum in Salerno
The province’s restored and revitalised main archaeological museum is an excellent showcase for a collection of mesmerising grave goods from the surrounding area, dating back to cave dwellers and the colonising Greeks. Don’t miss the 4th-century-BC bronze candelabra topped with the figures of a warrior and a woman, his arm around her shoulder.
The upstairs room is dedicated to a stunning 1st-century-BC bronze head of Apollo, discovered in the Gulf of Salerno in 1930, and centuries’ worth of findings from nearby Fratte, including a little vase engraved with salacious gossip describing gay and straight relations between the Greek, Roman and indigenous populations.
10. Museo Virtuale della Scuola Medica Salernitana
Slap bang in Salerno’s historic centre, this engaging museum deploys 3D and touch-screen technology to explore the teachings and wince-inducing procedures of Salerno’s once-famous, now-defunct medical institute. Established around the 9th century, the school was the most important centre of medical knowledge in medieval Europe, reaching the height of its prestige in the 11th century. It was closed in the early 19th century.
11. Pasticceria Romolo
This sprawling pasticceria across from the station dates from 1966 and the decor has changed little since. The cakes are legendary, and include frollini (fruit and chocolate tarts), amaretti (macaroons) and all-time most irresistible treat sfogliatelle (flaky pastry filled with ricotta, and warmed and dusted with sugar if you eat in). Fancy chocolates and wine are also available.
There’s an earthy southern Italian atmosphere here, with its terrace surrounded by historic houses decorated with washing hung out to dry. Choices are more innovative than you would expect and include such seafood dishes as squid with porcini mushrooms, and cuttlefish accompanied by creamed vegetables. The white-truffle ice cream makes a delicious finale. The owners run the adjacent B&B.
